Tea Philosophy and Your Daily Meditation

The custom of tea drinking goes back for millennia and it is very common in Eastern civilizations, where it is ritualized and is part of daily spiritual practice. Asian nations such as China, Japan, India and many other Asian cultures have the so called tea ceremony that is a ceremonial preparation and presentation of tea in connection with daily meditation and the practice of mindfulness.

Maybe the best known tea ceremony is the Japanese tea ceremony also known as “the way of the tea” in which matcha tea is brewed and drunk in conjunction with series of ancient meditative techniques. Nowadays, tea ceremony is probably still performed in this old way only in Buddhist temples and monasteries. However, the practice connecting tea ceremony and daily meditation has been entering the mainstream society via teachings of such spiritual figures like Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, teacher and author. Here is what he says about drinking tea:

“Tea is an act complete in its simplicity.
When I drink tea, there is only me and the tea.
The rest of the world dissolves.
There are no worries about the future.
No dwelling on past mistakes.
Tea is simple: loose-leaf tea, hot pure water, a cup.
I inhale the scent, tiny delicate pieces of the tea floating above the cup.
I drink the tea, the essence of the leaves becoming a part of me.
I am informed by the tea, changed.
This is the act of life, in one pure moment, and in this act the truth of the world suddenly becomes revealed: all the complexity, pain, drama of life is a pretense, invented in our minds for no good purpose.
There is only the tea, and me, converging.”

Mindfulness

I believe the main message of his tea ceremony is that we learn mindfulness, we learn how to be present in the now moment, we don’t think about the past or the future. We focus all our attention on the simple action of drinking tea and if we can do this with 100% of our awareness – that is a good meditation. Meditation is full awareness.

All Our Senses

Another thing we can learn from this practice is to become aware of our senses, our internal being and its interaction with something from the outside. We focus our attention on how the tea tastes, on its smell, on its temperature, colour, on the feeling it produces in us as we swallow it, of the warmth it provides us with and the stimulating effect it has on our energy.

Everything Impacts Us

We are greatly impacted by everything from our environment and the act of recognizing and acknowledging the effects a single cup of tea has on us can teach us to better discriminate and choose what we consume in all aspects, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It teaches us to honor and respect our experiences, our lives and ourselves.

“Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world earth revolves – slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future.” ― Thich Nhat Hanh

So if you haven’t tried tea ceremony yet, get yourself some good quality matcha tea from Australia and prepare everything as reverently as you can for the space where you will meet and honor your inner self, your very soul and the very existence of life. It is no wonder tea ceremony has played such a big part in ancient spiritual traditions – it is simple but very effective in leading us back to ourselves.
