The Link Between Emotions, Stress and Digestion

Stress can have a huge impact on digestion and the emotions. You’ve probably at some point experienced ‘butterflies in the stomach’ or ‘found information difficult to digest’ or even found ‘it hard to digest a person in your life’. If so, you’re already familiar with the fact that our digestion is hard wired to our brain and that emotions and stress can have a major impact on what’s going on in our digestive tract.
Our digestive system is linked to our second brain and produces many of the same neurotransmitters that are made in the brain, including serotonin, GABA, dopamine and melatonin. This pathway to the brain is known as the ‘brain-gut axis’ and is connected to our thoughts and emotions.
Our emotions and how we feel can affect what is going on in our gut. So in a kinesiology point of view, how you feel about yourself will often affect how well your digestion is working and how well you are digesting your food. So the better you feel about yourself the better your digestion will function too.
How can Kinesiology help me manage my emotions and digestion better?
In a kinesiology session with me I can help you identify any negative stress that may be impacting your digestive system. Kinesiology sessions help promote the connection of a healthy gut, self-esteem and a healthy mind.
When working on the body we may focus on your STOMACH energy, which is all about digestion and processing, and how well you are doing that. It also speaks to us about fulfillment and how well you are making decisions that are beneficial to you? Good stomach chi promotes peace and contentment.
Top 4 tips for gut-mind balance
If you think stress is affecting your digestive health, here are my top four waysto help bring your gut and mind back into balance.
1. Cut the sugar and stimulants: They both fuel gut bacteria, cause inflammation in the system and cause blood sugar spikes which will have an overall affect on your mood.
2. Stress free eating: Don’t eat when your feeling panicky or upset as this will affect your ability to digest your food! Sit down whilst eating and take the time to mindfully eat without too many distractions.
3. Probiotics: Take a good quality priobiotic supplement. A good brand has lots of strains in it with active live cells.
4. Manage your stress: It’s about turning on the relaxation response, whether it’s through meditation, exercise or having a regular kinesiology sessions, it’s essential you find something that helps you reduce and deal with stress.
