Cooking with Food Intolerances | How to Choose the Perfect Apron

Whether you’re whipping up a batch of bliss balls or blending your way through that perfect pumpkin soup, wearing an apron to your clothes from cacao, turmeric and God knows what else is super important! Also, what’s cooking without a bit of fun? We looooove to dance around the kitchen with a spatula in our hand, so we need an apron that fits well and also keeps our favourite get-up clean. We know that finding the perfect apron can be tough if you don’t know where to start, so we’re here to help!
Ideally you want a good selection to choose from and suppliers like Chef Works have you covered with a bunch of different options. If you are not sure what you should be looking for we have some tips and tricks to get you started.
Different types of aprons
We are going to take a look at the most popular professional aprons you can choose from. These can also be put to domestic use of course.
Aprons for chefs and budding amateurs
The chef’s apron is pretty basic; it’s straight and is made from just one piece of material that you will probably recognise chefs and butchers wearing. It’s a very simple design that ties around the neck. This is a very practical choice if all you need is to protect your clothes. It works best for those with a straight-up-and-down figure, so if you’re a bit curvy it may not be the best choice for you.
Aprons for bistro staff and cafe babes
If you’re visiting a cafe or bistro you will have seen the waiting staff wearing short aprons with pockets which are perfect for their fast-paced job. They can keep items such as money and order pads in the pockets (or let’s face it, lip gloss and their mobile phone!), leaving their hands free to give you fabulous service.
The Tuxedo apron for when you’re feeling fancy
This type of apron looks a little like the basic bib aprons for chefs, but has a bit more of an upmarket feel. Generally, tuxedo aprons tie at the waist and they also usually have pockets so they can be used by waiting staff who need space to store items such as order pads and pens.
The Hip apron for hipsters
This is the traditional half apron that you will often see being worn by waiting staff. Much like the tuxedo apron, this type of apron usually has pockets for storage.
Making sure the apron is tough enough
One of the most important things to remember when you are choosing an apron is that you need to select one that has some quality to it. There is no point buying a cheapie that is going to fall apart within a few weeks. Especially if you’re as wild as we are in the kitchen! Here are our top tips to make sure you find a toughie, but goodie!
- A material weight of at least 240gm should mean that you are fully protected against spills, including hot liquids. If you don’t know what gm your apron is, ask an expert!
- Make sure you check the laundry label to see how easy cleaning the apron will be. If you’re anything like us, you’ll want the quick throw-it-in-the-machine-on-your-way-out-the-door option.
- If you choose an apron that has ties which are sewn in they will usually retain their strength for longer.
So there you have it, babes, you now have a good idea about the different types and qualities of aprons available. We hope it helps you get your hands on one that you’ll love!
